Security barriers at a Tel Aviv rally failed to stop a 23-year-old man from Givatayim who allegedly shoved a bodyguard protecting Naftali Bennett. The incident occurred on Saturday night while Bennett addressed a crowd demanding an independent review of the failures leading to the October 7 massacre. The confrontation interrupted the event and led to the suspect's immediate arrest.
The man, identified as being under the influence of alcohol, attempted to breach the security perimeter surrounding Bennett. Witnesses reported that he shouted the slogan “Only Bibi” in support of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while pushing toward the former prime minister. He ignored verbal instructions from the security team to step back. The guards pushed him away, but the man continued to advance.
The physical altercation began when the man confronted one of the guards who had pushed him back. He shoved the guard in return, escalating the situation. The security detail quickly subdued the suspect and held him at the scene. Police officers arrived at the park shortly after the clash. They apprehended the man and transported him to the local police station for questioning.
Preliminary checks by investigators indicate that the suspect has no prior criminal record. Officials stated that he was likely intoxicated at the time of the incident. Investigators are currently examining the specific circumstances surrounding the shove and the man's behavior during the rally. No further charges have been announced as of Saturday night.
Naftali Bennett served as prime minister of Israel from June 2021 to June 2022. He is currently the chairman of the B'Yachad party. The rally took place in Tel Aviv and focused on establishing a commission of inquiry into the events of October 7. The protest occurred against a backdrop of rising political tension ahead of upcoming national elections.
The 2026 Knesset elections are scheduled for later this month. Members of the Israel Defense Forces began voting at military polling stations earlier this week. The incident adds to the series of public appearances by Bennett as he campaigns for the election. The arrest highlights the heightened security measures in place for political figures during this period.
Police continue to review surveillance footage and witness statements from the scene. The bodyguard who was shoved was not reported to have sustained major injuries. Bennett remained at the rally and continued his address after the suspect was removed from the area. The security detail maintained control of the perimeter following the intervention.
