Mbappe Targets Ballon d'Or With 22-Goal World Cup Record
Despite a season without trophies, the Real Madrid forward cites his record-breaking performance in North America to challenge the award's historical norm.

Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday with a distinct advantage in individual statistics, even as he lacks the team success that has historically defined the prize's recipients. The award, which carries no cash prize but elevates a player's global status, typically goes to athletes who win major titles.
The 2025-26 campaign ended without silverware for Mbappe at either the club or international level. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich. France placed fourth at the World Cup, falling to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match. This marks the second consecutive season for the Real Madrid squad without a major trophy.
Mbappe's primary argument rests on the 2026 World Cup in North America. He won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament and became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals in 22 matches. He surpassed Lionel Messi, who has 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. In club competition, Mbappe also topped the scoring charts in La Liga with 25 goals and in the Champions League with 15.
"Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," Mbappe said last month. When asked who he would vote for, he replied: "Myself."
His rivals have stronger trophy records. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies, including the Bundesliga title. Yet Mbappe argues that individual brilliance should prevail. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told RFI radio. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has also voiced support, noting that Mbappe made history this summer.
Historical data suggests the odds are not in Mbappe's favor. Every Ballon d'Or winner in the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 award after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title, while Rodri won Euro 2024 and the Premier League before his 2024 victory.
The last player to win the Ballon d'Or without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. That season, Ronaldo scored 66 goals for club and country while Portugal missed the 2012 World Cup and Real Madrid finished second in La Liga. Mbappe, who has been nominated nine times and placed third in 2023, now seeks to replicate that outcome.
