Elena Rybakina advanced to the final of the Ningbo Open on Friday, securing a two-set victory over Diana Shnaider.

The tournament serves as a preparatory event for the year-end WTA Finals. Rybakina holds the world number one ranking and the Australian Open and US Open titles. She arrived in Ningbo following a rough stretch of results. She suffered a heavy defeat in Beijing and subsequently withdrew from the Wuhan Open due to a foot injury. Her performance in the semifinal demonstrated her ability to return to form despite recent setbacks.

Rybakina defeated Shnaider, the sixth seed, with a score of 6-3, 7-5. The match took place at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre in the eastern Chinese city. In the first set, Rybakina took control early with aggressive play from the back of the court. She sealed the set on her eleventh set point. The second set followed a similar trajectory. Rybakina broke serve to lead 4-3. Shnaider responded by breaking Rybakina to love in the tenth game. Rybakina reclaimed the lead with powerful hitting in the eleventh game and served out the match.

The left-handed style of Shnaider presented specific challenges for the world number one. Rybakina noted that playing against left-handers is uncommon on the tour and required adjustment. She stated that switching patterns during rallies was difficult. Fernandez, her opponent in the final, is also left-handed. This creates a similar tactical test for Rybakina in Sunday's championship match.

Leylah Fernandez, an unseeded Canadian player, earned her place in the final by defeating Marie Bouzkova. Fernandez won the first semifinal with an identical score of 6-3, 7-5. The final is scheduled for Sunday at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre.

After the Ningbo Open, Rybakina will compete in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week. She will then begin the defense of her WTA Finals title at the tournament in Indian Wells, which starts on November 8. Rybakina described the upcoming final as a long and difficult contest. She expressed satisfaction with securing the victory in two sets and said she would give her all in the final.
