The Bundesliga schedule remains unchanged for Bayern Munich fans, but the person standing in the technical area will be different. Aaron Danks, the club's English assistant coach, will lead the team from the sideline on Sunday at Freiburg. This comes after head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed on the training pitch on Friday and was rushed to the hospital.
The club's director of sport, Max Eberl, addressed media on Saturday to provide an update on the 40-year-old's condition. Eberl described Kompany as stable, though he noted that medical examinations were still ongoing to identify the specific virus causing the illness. He emphasized that the club is not rushing the recovery process. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," Eberl stated. He clarified that the absence would be measured in weeks rather than days.
Danks, who conducted the news conference in Kompany's stead, offered insight into his brief contact with the head coach on Friday. He explained that their conversation was focused entirely on health rather than tactics. "I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said. He added that the coaching staff would work together to maintain the club's operational stability during this period.
The decision to play the Bundesliga fixture was deliberate. Eberl confirmed that the club did not seek a postponement of the Sunday match. He argued that a strong performance and a positive result on the pitch would serve as the best form of support for Kompany's recovery. "That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover," he said. The only change to the immediate schedule was the postponement of Bayern's second team match on Friday, which followed the collapse directly.
Squad availability for the Freiburg trip is affected by personal circumstances. Danks confirmed that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will miss the game. Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. Kompany had returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal despite being ill. He later admitted to ignoring early warning signs, stating that his body had eventually told him, "Enough is enough!"
Bayern Munich enters Sunday's match as the defending champions and the leaders of the Bundesliga table. They sit one point ahead of Freiburg. The club's next major competitive fixture is a Champions League match in Madrid against Atletico on November 3.
