Two Israeli soldiers were killed in a targeted shooting attack on Friday, triggering an immediate and large-scale military response in the northern entrance to Hebron. The deaths of St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem at Yehuda Junction have set the stage for a significant escalation in the region, with troops now pressing ahead with a comprehensive counterterrorism campaign.
The most visible element of this new phase was the demolition of illegally constructed buildings and infrastructure on Saturday. These structures were located near the scene of the fatal ambush, and military officials stated that their removal was intended to restore law and order while eliminating potential security threats posed by the physical environment. This action marked a decisive step in the broader operation designed to secure the area.
The campaign is being commanded by the Judea Brigade and involves a diverse array of military and security personnel. Troops from the Duvdevan and Maglan units, along with the Paratroopers Brigade, are on the ground, supported by Givati reconnaissance reservists and the Border Police. The Shin Bet security agency provides critical intelligence guidance for these efforts, ensuring that operations are directed by the most current information available.
Military teams have conducted extensive sweeps, searching approximately 200 locations to rule out the presence of weapons and active terrorist activity. During these searches, ten suspects were arrested. The focus of the operation is on the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha neighborhoods, which are densely populated districts in western Hebron. According to IDF assessments, about 2,000 residents in the area belong to the Ja'aba clan, a group affiliated with Hamas and the origin of the gunmen responsible for Friday's attack.
Security officials have identified the attackers as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba, both of whom are linked to Hamas. The military noted that the pair came directly from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. To facilitate a thorough investigation, the military began evacuating residents from these specific districts on Friday evening. Civilians who wished to leave were allowed to exit through checkpoints operated by the Shin Bet and the IDF. This measure allows security forces to search family homes and surrounding areas for weapons caches, explosives, and other terrorist infrastructure without risking civilian safety.
The area is well known to the security establishment as a hub for Hamas activity in Hebron, making the current operations a critical effort to disrupt local capabilities. A situational assessment is scheduled for Saturday to determine if the scope of the operation should be expanded further. In the meantime, Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, who commands the IDF's West Bank Division, has broadened arrest operations and searches in the Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm areas, as well as in additional locations throughout Samaria.
These expanded efforts occur against a backdrop of heightened concern regarding the intentions of Hamas leadership abroad. There are growing fears that the group is attempting to orchestrate terrorist attacks ahead of upcoming elections. The current operation in Hebron is therefore not only a response to a specific incident but also a strategic move to stabilize the region and preempt further violence in the lead-up to the polls.
