Israeli military forces have effectively erased a significant portion of a residential neighborhood in the West Bank city of Hebron, displacing approximately 1,500 residents in a single day. Local authorities describe the rapid and extensive destruction as a punitive measure following a deadly attack on a nearby military checkpoint. This sudden escalation has intensified tensions in the region with national elections scheduled to take place in four days.

The scale of the destruction is substantial. The Hebron municipality reported that 35 hectares, or about 86 acres, in the Ein Deir Baha district were either demolished or marked for immediate removal. Residents shared video evidence showing entire urban blocks reduced to rubble, with soldiers marking Palestinian homes with black crosses. One footage showed a bulldozer demolishing a stone wall on a hillside, while another captured a large residential building, reportedly belonging to a prominent local family, being draped in Israeli flags and converted into a temporary military command center.

The operation was triggered by a shooting incident on Friday in which two gunmen attacked an Israeli army checkpoint outside the city. A brief but intense gunfight ensued, resulting in the death of two soldiers and the wounding of three others. Both attackers were killed during the exchange. Because the Ein Deir Baha district was identified as the home area for the gunmen, military leaders chose to focus their response there. This geographic targeting has led local critics to argue that the broader community is being penalized for the actions of a small group.

Political figures have played a visible role in the aftermath. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich visited the checkpoint site and promised a fierce response to the attack. Netanyahu stated that Israel would act to destroy the area, while Smotrich, who is campaigning with a smaller coalition party, was filmed in body armor overseeing demolitions. He ordered the immediate removal of structures near the attack site and called for a broader military campaign similar to those currently underway in Gaza and Lebanon. The timing of these actions has led to widespread speculation that the military push is designed to influence the upcoming electoral results.

The immediate impact on the local population has been severe. A municipality spokesperson confirmed that around 300 families have been formally evicted. Many residents have sought temporary shelter with friends and relatives, while the city has opened community halls and children's play areas to accommodate those without other options. The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that Israeli authorities plan to displace an additional 2,500 people in the coming days. The city of 250,000 residents remains sealed off, with military checkpoints controlling every point of entry.

Civil rights activists have voiced strong condemnation of the operation. Issa Amro, a local activist whose own sister's family was displaced, described the situation as collective punishment for an event that the majority of residents did not support. He suggested that the suffering of innocent families is being utilized as political material for the elections. Amro expressed uncertainty about the long-term intentions behind the demolitions, questioning whether the actions are purely for propaganda or part of a serious post-election plan. The Israeli army was approached for comment regarding the scope of the operations and the videos of the destruction.

This incident highlights the volatile intersection of military strategy and political timing in the West Bank. With the election date looming, the military response to a localized security incident has expanded into a major urban redevelopment effort. The displacement of thousands of people in such a short timeframe raises questions about the durability of the current administrative arrangements in Hebron. As the military maintains a tight seal on the city, the international community is watching closely to see how the political outcome will shape the future of this contested neighborhood.
