The family was separated by a strong current on Tuesday as they snorkelled near the southern tip of Bimini in the Bahamas. The 36-year-old woman, who is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was pulled from the water after trying to reach her two sons, who had also been swept away. Both boys were later rescued by others in the water.
Royal Bahamas Police Force officers at the Alice Town station received a report shortly after 10am that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Police noted that she had already been moved to a local clinic for medical attention before their arrival. A doctor at the facility pronounced her dead despite efforts to revive her. CPR had been administered at the ferry dock following her rescue from the sea.
The police force opened an investigation into the sudden death immediately after the incident. Officers stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The force released a preliminary account of the sequence of events on social media, confirming the timeline of the rescue and subsequent medical response.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed the identity of the deceased as a British national. A spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities to provide support to the family. The statement expressed condolences to the relatives of the woman who died during the family outing.
