Health authorities in Africa are investigating a potential transmission link at Entebbe International Airport. The inquiry focuses on whether the first confirmed Ebola patient in Nigeria and the first case in Kenya crossed paths in Uganda. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discussed the probe during a press briefing on Thursday.

Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in over ten years on Tuesday. The patient is the wife of a diplomat stationed in Abuja. She was born in Uganda and spent September on vacation in her home country. She returned to Nigeria earlier this month. Dr. Wessam Mankoula, who leads emergency preparedness at the Africa CDC, stated that the woman is currently receiving treatment. A total of 44 close contacts have been placed in quarantine. Investigators are working to determine the source of her initial exposure.

The geographic spread of the virus marks a new phase of the outbreak. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the fourth continent nation to record a case. It is the first in West Africa and the farthest from the origin point in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The current epidemic began in eastern Congo in May. It has become the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record. At least 4,600 people have died in Congo, and roughly 9,700 have been infected.

Uganda reported about 20 cases earlier in the year but was declared free of the virus in August. Kenya recorded its first case in early October. Eight additional cases have since been confirmed in that country. The first Kenyan patient, who has died, traveled from Congo to Kenya via Uganda. That patient and the Nigerian case were both present at Entebbe International Airport on the same day. This temporal overlap prompted the current investigation. Mankoula said the agency is examining whether there was some sort of interaction between the two cases at the airport.

Ebola transmits through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or through contaminated items. The disease causes severe fever and can be fatal. Individuals are generally not considered infectious until symptoms appear. The investigation aims to clarify the transmission chain across these three nations.
