Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel has died after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second division match on Monday. His club announced his death on Tuesday morning, expressing grief and offering support to his family and loved ones.

The teams were level at 2-2 at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez when the incident occurred, seven minutes into stoppage time at the end of the La Liga 2 fixture. De Miguel, 30, had entered the game as a substitute in the 59th minute, when Tenerife held a 2-0 lead over the visitors.

The collision came after the ball was cleared out of Tenerife’s penalty area and bounced towards the middle of the pitch. Owono challenged de Miguel, with the goalkeeper’s knee appearing to hit the forward in the chest. The referee immediately sent Owono off as players urgently signalled for medical staff to attend to de Miguel, who was lying on the field.

The match was abandoned soon afterwards, with players in tears. According to Spanish media reports, de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest while being taken by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz. He was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

In its statement on Tuesday, Tenerife said the club was struggling to comprehend the death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. “There are no words of comfort,” the statement read. “There is absolutely nothing to mitigate this feeling full of sadness.”

The club also expressed solidarity with his devastated family, those close to him and the people of Tenerife mourning his death. It said his family appreciated the support they had received and asked for privacy “in these terrible moments”.

Born in Madrid, de Miguel began his playing career with a debut for Leganes B in 2015 and subsequently represented eight other Spanish clubs. He signed a three-year contract with Tenerife in 2025, having previously played for Castellon.

At Castellon, he had been the team’s leading scorer with 16 goals during their promotion to the second division in the 2023-2024 season. His professional debut followed in August 2024, when he was 27.
