The French capital’s suburbs experienced a burst of coordinated violence on Friday that lasted approximately 15 minutes. The incident resulted in one death and five injuries, with the attacker firing from a moving vehicle in two neighboring towns.

The shooting began in Trappes, located south-west of Paris, before the suspect drove to the adjacent town of La Verrière. Witnesses reported that the gunman, identified by media as Kevin T, drove a grey Renault Clio through several neighborhoods. He stopped to fire at a petrol station, a medical centre, and a playground in Trappes. The spree concluded in La Verrière, where a police union official stated he was detained on the main road.

Presidential remarks framed the event as a historical shift for the country. Emmanuel Macron visited the scene and labeled the incident a "racist terrorist attack." He stated that it marked a "turning point in the life of our Republic and our nation." Macron claimed this was the first time France had witnessed a random racial killing of this magnitude. He urged citizens to resist "ideologies taking root" and said victims were targeted due to their skin color or religion.

Legal proceedings are moving quickly under specific terror statutes. The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) described the case as "murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise." Charges also include possession of a Category A weapon, a classification that covers military-grade arms and burst-fire capabilities. The office is investigating conspiracy to prepare crimes against persons. A member of the suspect's immediate family was also taken into custody on Friday.

The suspect has a prior record but was not flagged as a high-level threat. French media report Kevin T is 39 years old and had four previous convictions that were automatically expunged. Local reports indicate he was known to police but not to intelligence services. The prosecutor's office told BFMTV that he was not on a list of people regarded as a serious threat to national security.

Injuries range from severe to critical. Three of the wounded, including a 12-year-old girl, remain in serious condition. The girl's mother told broadcaster RTL that her daughter suffered eight gunshot wounds and required surgery. She noted her daughter was wearing a headscarf and wondered if that influenced the target selection. The local police chief told BFMTV that the suspect used an older-style semi-automatic weapon. Le Parisien reported the firearm dated back to World War Two.

Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh described the method of attack as random. He said the gunman "fired randomly" while hoping to cause "as many casualties as possible." Rabeh added, "He wanted to cause carnage." The investigation continues as authorities assess the motive and the condition of the remaining victims.
