East Lansing police Chief Jennifer Brown announced on Sunday that two separate shootings near the Michigan State University campus left five people injured on Halloween night. The department responded to four distinct incidents during the holiday weekend, with the two gunfights accounting for the majority of the emergency calls.
The first incident occurred at the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street, where officers fired multiple shots. Three victims were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Brown stated that two of these individuals are listed in stable condition, while the status of the third was not immediately available. Later that evening, a second shooting was reported at Stoddard and Frye Avenues, resulting in two more people being shot. Both of those victims are currently stable.
Brown revealed that several people have been taken into custody in connection with the violence. Officers also recovered multiple firearms from the scene, though authorities have not yet confirmed if those specific weapons were used in the attacks. The chief did not specify if the two shootings are linked or if any of the victims are students.
A Michigan State University spokesperson noted that the campus police department assisted the East Lansing Police Department but clarified that the criminal activity did not involve a threat to the campus. The spokesperson added that the shootings did not take place on MSU property. The East Lansing Fire Department handled 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period, including 75 calls into Halloween night.
