Australian author Craig Silvey was sentenced to seven months in prison on Monday, November 2, after admitting offences involving child exploitation material. The 44-year-old novelist, whose books include Jasper Jones and Runt, had pleaded guilty earlier this year to distributing and possessing the material.

The Western Australian district court heard that police discovered numerous category one photographs and videos during a search of his home in Fremantle. The material was stored on his laptop and mobile phone. Silvey, a father of three, was found with explicit images depicting children and adults.

The court also heard about messages in which Silvey expressed sexual interest in young boys. He began an online conversation with another user on a pornography website, using the handle Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. During that exchange, he identified himself as being from Fremantle and suggested that they shared similar interests.

Silvey then asked whether the other user had Signal or Session, and their conversation moved to an encrypted messaging app. In subsequent messages, he described his interest in taboos and expressed sexual desires involving children. He also sent a message indicating excitement about an explicit photograph showing an adult man and a boy.

Judge Hayley Cormann described the offences as very serious and deeply disturbing, emphasising the harm involved in material exploiting children. “This offending involves children and it is destructive and it is devastating,” she said. Two other charges, concerning the production and possession of further child exploitation material, had been dropped in May.

Silvey is widely known for Jasper Jones, his 2009 coming-of-age novel, which is regarded as a modern Australian classic. The book was subsequently adapted for a feature film and several stage productions. His literary career has also included shortlistings for the Miles Franklin Literary Award and the International Dublin Literary Award.

His other recognised works include Rhubarb and Honeybee, with Honeybee winning the Australian Indie Book Award in 2021. His children’s novel Runt was also adapted into a film. After he was charged, publishers Allen & Unwin and Fremantle Press, which published Rhubarb, halted promotion of his books. Most of his titles were also taken off reading lists across Australia.
