Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday, October 26, to address energy security and trade dynamics with Ukrainian officials. The visit focuses on securing natural gas supplies and deepening economic ties between the two neighbors. Tofan stated that Moldova is considering purchasing gas from Ukraine to meet domestic demand, a move aimed at stabilizing energy costs before the winter season.
The Moldovan government confirmed the agenda, which includes bilateral economic cooperation and regional security. Tofan is accompanied by a high-level delegation including Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu, and Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Bolea. Their presence signals that the talks extend beyond commercial interests to include strategic defense and infrastructure planning.
Tofan is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the chairman of the Ukrainian parliament. These high-level engagements are designed to align both nations' diplomatic and economic strategies. The meetings will specifically target the development of trade flows and the reinforcement of mutual security frameworks.
Both prime ministers will also participate in the Kyiv International Economic Forum. The event is dedicated to showcasing investment opportunities and fostering economic collaboration. This forum provides a platform for business leaders from both countries to identify specific projects that could benefit from increased cross-border investment.
Energy coordination has been a priority in recent weeks. On October 14, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Tofan to discuss winter preparations and shared sectoral challenges. Tofan had earlier noted on October 12 that he intended to use this current trip to finalize discussions on gas purchases. These prior contacts laid the groundwork for the specific trade items now on the table in Kyiv.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has also addressed the humanitarian dimension of the relationship. She stated that Moldova is prepared to receive additional refugees from Ukraine if the situation there worsens. Her comments highlight the country's readiness to support its neighbor through both economic and social channels as regional pressures persist.
