With less than a day remaining before the midterm elections, President Donald Trump held a press conference at the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool to address his administration's renovation efforts. The $14 million project, which has faced significant criticism, became the centerpiece of his final campaign push. Trump blamed his predecessors for the green algae that previously covered the water, holding up a large photograph to illustrate his point. He described the algae as brutal and noted that it had formed easily during the previous administration, resulting in years of visible dirt and filth.

The event was viewed by many as an unusual choice for a closing message, especially given that polls indicated Americans were not fully supportive of the president's intense focus on renovation projects. Earlier in the year, the project became an international talking point when a promise to turn the water American flag blue resulted instead in a green algae takeover. Despite advice from aides to focus on other matters, Trump viewed the beautification of Washington as one of his strongest legacies, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. During the briefing, he claimed to have kept every promise he made, adding that he had actually kept far more promises than he had initially made.

As election day arrived, the president shifted his attention to other priorities. He published an American declaration of freedom in space, stating that the solar system and outer space beyond Earth are the province of all humans. Additionally, he declared the current week as Anti-Communism Week in honor of the victims of socialism and communism, though it remained unclear how the White House would mark the occasion.

On Tuesday morning, shortly after polls opened, Trump made a surprise announcement on Fox News. He stated that the United States would end military aid to Israel at the end of the year, cutting off the $4 billion in funding. This position aligned with the views of many voters, as a Quinnipiac poll in September found that nearly half of Americans believed the US was too supportive of Israel. Trump criticized Democratic candidates, specifically citing Abdul El-Sayed, a Senate candidate in Michigan, for using the funding figure as a talking point. He argued that the left used the amount as a signal of unfairness, calling it a bad talking point that he was sick of hearing.

By Tuesday evening, as polls began to close, Trump turned his attention to Fox News, a network he had long considered an ally. He posted on Truth Social that the network's poll was insulting and that every question was a hit job. In a follow-up post twenty minutes later, he claimed that Fox News ratings had dropped by 27 percent because the network was spending too much time covering what he called the Trump Deranged Democrats. He insisted that his own numbers were better than they had ever been and that the decline in viewership was the network's fault, not his.

Within an hour, results began to pour in, showing major wins for Democrats in Georgia, New Hampshire, and North Carolina. As the bad news for Republicans continued at a rapid pace, signaling a stunning rebuke of the president, Trump issued a short statement to deflect responsibility. He wrote on Truth Social that he was not on the ballot and that if he had been, his party would have won in a landslide. He concluded the message by thanking the public for their attention to the matter.

The series of events highlighted a week filled with mixed signals and strategic shifts. From the algae controversy at the reflecting pool to the sudden announcement on Israeli aid and the public feud with Fox News, the president's final days before the election were marked by an effort to control the narrative despite mounting evidence of a challenging political landscape.
